To provide high-quality service, mechanics need to be meticulous. Mechanics typically only change oil when a customer brings in their vehicle. If a customer requests something else, mechanics shouldn't do it. As mechanics often spend long hours standing or lifting heavy objects, they need to have the physical strength to do so. They must be capable of lifting a vehicle without becoming tired.

The job of mechanic is fun

Many people love to work on cars. If this interests you, becoming a mechanic may be a good career choice. It's never boring, and there's plenty of room for advancement. It's a rewarding career that will keep mechanics interested for many years. They are constantly learning new technology and learning new things. However, mechanics are not for everyone.

Apart from fixing cars, mechanics can also repair a wide range of vehicles. Additionally to fixing cars, mechanics also have the ability to fix cabs, trucks, and other vehicles. Nearly 230,000 motor vehicle repair centers are available in the country so a mechanic can work almost anywhere. Depending on the job, mechanics can either live in big cities or small towns. While the salary of mechanics is dependent on their experience, it is usually not too high.

The steady salary for mechanics is a good one

You can earn a steady income by becoming a mobile mechanic. You can work anywhere you like and as independent contractors. While this means that you will work for yourself and set your own hours, you are also responsible for your own expenses. Since mobile mechanics are not employees of a company, they have no set hours and are responsible for their own mileage and wear and tear on the cars they work on.

Mechanic salaries are generally affected by the state of the economy, but one factor that may have an impact on the wages you receive depends on your location. Orange County mechanics make more than those in San Diego. It is also the cheapest county in California. This is because luxury cars require a highly specialized mechanic, while domestic cars don't. California mechanics earn higher salaries in California than their counterparts from San Diego or Los Angeles.

They must be able take apart large parts of the vehicle for repairs

Mechanics need to have analytical skills and a thorough knowledge of automobile engine components. To repair major parts, mechanics must be able disassemble and reassemble them. They should also be capable of diagnosing problems and recommending the best course. If the mechanic cannot justify the cost of the first repair, it is best to look for another mechanic. You may be shocked to learn that mechanics who do work as part replacements charge customers for this!

They should be able or able to lift large objects.

Even though workers don't have to lift heavy objects anymore, they still need good body mechanics. While some companies may have adopted new technology to reduce the severity of these injuries, heavy object moving requires skilled mechanics. Musculoskeletal injury cost the U.S. an estimated $332billion in 2012/2014 and 124m people were injured in 2015. These injuries are often caused by strenuous activities such as lifting heavy objects.

FAQ

Is it hard to get a job working as an auto mechanic?

Yes, it can be very easy. Many garages advertise their vacancies online, and many people apply just because they think it might be fun. Try applying to a few jobs and seeing if the garages accept student applications. Alternatively, you could ask friends and family if they know anyone who works in the industry. They might be willing to recommend someone.

What length of an automotive course is it?

A course in automotive lasts three years.

The first year is spent on theory, learning all about cars. The second year is spent on practical training where you learn how to drive, fix engines, and do other mechanical jobs around the car. The final year is spent doing a placement at a local garage, which gives you experience in fixing real-world problems.

How do I fix my vehicle as a hobby?

You might be interested in cars as a hobby. It is possible to learn about cars, repair them, purchase parts, or simply enjoy them. If you are looking for something more, it would be an excellent hobby.

However, it's not easy to turn this into a full-time career. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication. It requires a lot investment.

You may not be able to have an emotional connection with cars unless there is a valid reason.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

Three main areas of employment are available for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

Most people think of this as the first step to becoming a mechanic. It's also the easiest way you can get started. Either work for someone else's shop or you can start your own.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. After being accepted into the union, the union will provide training.

Once you complete the training, it's time to get started.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

After you register, you will be granted a license for your garage to operate.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. You can't fix major engine problems with your license.

Apart from selling spare parts, customers will also expect you to provide guidance and advice.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

These positions may require applicants to complete specific training before being allowed on the job. This allows employers to select the most qualified candidates for their roles.

Some dealerships recruit students right out of school. These graduates have no difficulty learning about cars because they already know the basics and principles of mechanical engineering.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, independent garages tend to concentrate on providing high-quality services.

Independent garages can pay higher wages because they aren't associated with any company. Because these jobs don't have to be associated with any company, they can generally offer better wages than dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many business owners prefer to manage their own businesses rather than delegating responsibility to others.

You may find yourself working for long hours and not having control over the day.

Also, expect to make lower wages than if your job was at a dealership.

You can switch jobs easily. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

Alternatively, if you'd like to work at an independent garage, then you could try applying directly to the owner of the garage.

It's not always easy to find a job. There are many other factors that can influence your earnings.

For example, the type of vehicle you repair and whether you charge extra for labor.
