Alternatively, you could ask friends and family if they know anyone who works in the industry. They might be happy to recommend someone.

Does it really matter what college I choose?

Not really. There is no difference between colleges in terms of how to get into the automobile industry. Some schools have better programs than others, so you might want to look elsewhere if your goal is something more specialized.

Is it difficult to become a mechanic apprentice

It's not simple, but you can learn quickly and there are many avenues for advancement.

You will need patience and perseverance. You will also need to be able fix cars, trucks and motorcycles.

Customers and relatives can exert a lot on you. But, you shouldn’t be pressured to make any decisions you aren’t happy with.

If you enjoy fixing cars, it could be a great career choice. You can make a decent living and build your business.

You might choose to take a different route. This is where you might be interested in becoming a technician.

This could involve using your technical knowledge to support other employees. This could be a way to help technicians with their problems or to teach them new techniques.

Another option is to be a service advisor. You will offer assistance and advice to customers when they bring cars to a garage.

Your decision depends on what you want to do. There are many options to choose from, and it is up to you which one suits you the best.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

For car mechanics, there are three main areas for employment:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is the place most people begin to consider becoming mechanics. It's also the easiest way you can get started. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

If you decide to open your own garage, you'll need to register with the government. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

After you register, you will be granted a license for your garage to operate.

Your license allows you to sell spare parts and make minor repairs. It won't allow you to fix major engine problems.

In addition to selling spare parts, you'll also be expected to offer advice and guidance to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

Some dealerships hire general mechanics to handle all aspects of car repair.

Some positions require that applicants complete training before they can be allowed to work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships will even hire graduates right out of university. These graduates already have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering, so they are able to learn all about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages do not belong to any dealership. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Independent garages can pay higher wages because they aren't associated with any company. Because these jobs don't have to be associated with any company, they can generally offer better wages than dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many business owners prefer to own their businesses and not delegate the responsibility to others.

You may find yourself working for long hours and not having control over the day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. You can switch jobs easily if you are interested in working at a dealership. Simply ask your employer if they would be open to hiring you as a mechanic.

If you prefer to work in an independent garage, you might consider applying directly to its owner.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

How long is an automotive mechanic apprenticeship

An automotive mechanic apprenticeship takes around three years to complete. This includes two years in school and two as an apprentice. The first year teaches you all aspects, from theory to practical skills and safety procedures. You will also learn to use tools efficiently and safely during this period. After the completion of the first year, you will spend another year on the job training. Here you'll gain valuable experience in different trades. You'll have the opportunity to attend formal courses during these periods too.

The final year is dedicated to earning certifications and qualifications in the field. These include NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications), which are awarded after passing exams covering specific topics within the industry. There are also HNCs (Higher National Certificates), which cover general subjects like management, business administration, customer service, and more. City & Guilds certificates offer qualifications in certain trades.
